Senor, you MUST sign the book! (Servant of God, Episode 1)
The Cast:
John as Luthor, Jamaican ship captain
Kathy as Annie, Sensationalist Reporter
Jason as Aston Wainwright, Archeologist
Annie and Luthor were enjoying the sights of Havana when contacted by a O'Neil Williams from the US Consulate. He asked Annie over drinks to look into the strange death of the Monsignor Valdez, a Church of Rome official who had been in Cuba for perhaps a month as a investigator into the proposed Sainthood of a Father Fernandez - a former Inquisitor who had established a Monastic Order in Cuba in the 1570s. At the same time, archaeologist Professor Aston Wainwright. also in Havana, was asked by the Catholic Church to look into the murder of Msr. Valdez. The three combined efforts and after a briefing by Monsignor de Borbon about what had happened to Valdez - locked room mystery, desiccated body, heart removed, they went to the scene of the crime.
The body had been removed, but that was all, and outside the room a small shrine (candles and rosary) had been built - apparently a miracle had taken place nearby that night. Annie looks into it and finds the name of a poor woman who spent the night in the room next door to Valdez (with her baby) - the woman's name is Donna Hernan.
Luther finds a protestant bible - odd thing for a catholic official to have - with muddy stains near a passage in Matthew. He also determines that no one could have gotten in the room from outside..unless they could fly, or some other mystic shit. The room is four stories up and over a majestic courtyard, with a church ringing its bells on the far side.
Aston talks with the maid and the deskman, as well as the police Colonel. He finds that there was an unknown monk in the hotel the day before Valdez was killed - a monk who did not sign the registration book...quite a feat, as the deskman insists that everyone sign the book - which Luther will not do. Luthor is ejected from the hotel.
Next stop is the Morgue - which also has a registration book - which Luthor again does not sign and hence cannot come in. Luther stays outside smoking and listening to church bells. Annie and Aston do, and look at the horrible body of the priest. Annie asks what or if anyone has seen something like this. Two old medics in the morgue answer - the first recalls things like this in the Spanish-American War; he always thought from gas or shelling - always around hospitals. The second contents it is a mystical creature called El Cuco - who sucks the victim dry. Annie pays a lot of money to take the corpse's picture on the sly, and forgets to take off the lens cap...
The next stop is a rare books and antique store that the Monsignor mentioned his last trip before dying at the hotel...Libros Raros Y Antiguos de Jimenez. Walking across the courtyard to the small store, the group hears church bells and a wedding couple at the top of the stairs to the church. The bride is signing a wedding registration book. As the group starts to move past, a troop of US Marines marches past, halting the investigators for but a moment.
The group enters the shop and meets Sr. Jimenez, who asks them to sign the registry - Luther leaves. Annie signs and then looks at the wall. There is an ink drawing that looks very like the scene that just played out outside! (Except for Spanish soldiers not US Marines. Jimenez explains he bought the drawing in Spain 40 years ago. Annie starts to loose her mind. Aston finds out that Valdez visited the shop three times - once on the night of his death. He was initially looking for a copy of The Life of Father Fernando, then The Journal of Don Diego de los Canarias, then the night of his death a Protestant Bible. Aston looks through the register and notices a Brother Hilario signed in...Jimenez knows the Brother as a very knowledgeable man, but did not see him this last visit - not unusual as he is quiet and comes and goes. Annie hears the name Hilario and is drawn to the drawing...signed Hilario dos Santos...she stumbles out of the book store and towards the church, the bells toll as she climbs the steps (Luthor following at a discrete distance) and Annie stands at the top of the stairs looking around...and gives a stard when a priest she had not noticed before touches her arm...
