Opening: Badger makes a deal and Patron Bond with Pretzelquatal, The Winged White Snake of Balance. "Pretzel" wants Badger to diminish both the powers of Law and Chaos in order to restore some balance to this mad land. After sealing their bond, Pretzel dropped Badger off in some mountains to head for a sacred unholy site of Chaos...but before he could get far, a large green hand wrapped around Badger and it was lights out...
Meanwhile in Pan'pot'sun...
With Kiya being dragged towards an alter as a proposed sacrifice to Mythris, a Winged Lion God of Chaos, things looked grim. But as her comrades leapt to her defense, with Amar taking great glee in cutting down dozens of foolish citizens in the mob and the other K-girls quickly cutting Kiya loose. Unfortunately, things went too well, too early, and when the mob and acolytes charged, Amar was separated from the girls. Confronted by the High Priestess of Mythris, Amar was hypnotized, turned and set to kill his friends!
Irate at the brutal cult, and interfering with their illegal enterprise (a body theft ring), the Berry, Bornak and the Plague Doctor fought to get through both cult and crazed citizens. Sadly Bornak and the Plague Doc died clearing a way for Berry to escape.
Seeing Berry's flight, the K-girls fought a withdrawal and followed the speedy Berry to his hideout, Omar's a dive bar and durrang den under a laundry shop. There, the girls got an image of Badger in a hanging cage asking for them to come rescue him. He seemed to imply riches and magic if they did. They also meet Wilhelm the Merchant and brains of the now foiled body theft ring. The hint of loot and getting out of a city about to receive the worst of a Malazan crackdown, Wilhelm gets some cash from the girls and buys a cart, provisions and a couple good riding horses and they whole group prepare to leave.
In the city above, Amar snaps out of his trance and quickly kills the two Cult Acolytes with him. Apparently the general uprising by the Mythis Cult had failed (loss of too many henchmen in the town square and a return of the Malazan Army). Getting the same message from Badger, Amar grudgingly heads out of town to rescue the Wizard.
Somewhere outside of town, Amar meets up with the rest of the party and they travel overland to the base of a fortress upon a dark hill. Said to belong to a strange green skinned wizard, known for kidnapping villagers to power his bizarre experiments. Despite their misgivings at rescuing Badger, the party prepared to assault the structure, as the lure of loot beckons!
