The City of Broken Dreams (WWCthulhu) Part 1

The Cast:
John as Mr. Phillips 68 yr old retired Dutch engineer
Kathy as Victoria, Proper English collegette with leftist leanings
Nick as Clifton, English test pilot
and introducing Wyatt as Max Webber, SIS spy in Vienna

Group escapes across the Czech border with Austria. Three of the party are still badly wounded Giovanni, O'Sullivan and Clifton. They are taken in by a (British) Secret Service man in Vienna, Max Weber, and stashed in the basement of the Goglehof, a cafe in central Vienna.

Max is contacted by an old flame, Gisela, who he suspects as a spy for the Abwehr (German Intelligence).

Max co-ops Victoria and Phillips into helping him with Gisela. They will watch over the meeting as it could be a trap.

At the meet, Gisela shares that she is in Vienna to bury her fiance, a Dr. Erlichman who died under mysterious circumstances. Gisela is sure that he was murdered, (implying the Nazi government did it) and she wants Max to find out. She also implies that she knows that Max is a spy and that investigating will keep her silence.

She provides some papers that Dr. E sent her before his death. The party later finds a secret message on the back of one and it leads them to either a bookstore or a Sphinx Reading Club.

They opt for the bookstore. There they meet the creepy Ernst Pretzche the bookshop owner. Clilfton and Victoria go in, but Ernst is unamused by their talk and throws them out, suspiscious at their motives, he calls for Gotthold Fuchs...a man of sinister mystery, who immediately sets out with two thugs in tow for the bookshop.

Mr. Phillips had decided to try his luck in a back alley. Before his allies can catch up to him, he observes Fuchs and thugs entering the bookshop from an alley door. Curious, Phillips walks to the back door to try to hear what is said. He lingers too long, and is caught, briefly, when one of the Nazi thugs leaves to take a piss (in the alley). He grabs Phillips and even as joined by his fellow thug, Clifton races down the alley to try to rescue Phillips The thugs see Clifton, and chase him, right into Max and Victoria...fight ensues, even as Fuchs catches Phillips in a dread gaze.

Fuchs begins speaking in a strange language that cuts to Phillips core...but even as some unearthly power enters Phillips mind, some deep resolve comes to the fore and the unearthly invasion is cast back! Fuch's steps back stunned, but Phillips does not hesitate, reaching into the stunned Nazi's trenchcoat, Phillips pulls out Fuchs PPK and puts a bullet in the man's head.

Clifton gets hit, and goes unconscious. Max takes a bullet too, but between the three they put down the two Nazi thugs.

Ernst looks out the door of the bookshop and sees the body of Fuchs. The creepy old man spits on the body. "Fool!" He looks up at Phillips. "He killed Erlichmann, but was a fool to not get his notes first!" With that epitaph, the toad-like bookstore keeper slams the alley door closed.  Despite his efforts, Phillips cannot make the door budge.

The rest of the team gets Clifton to the hoopty car and  shouts at Phillips. Sirens begiun to sound and the group gets away.

Although they now know who killed Erlichmann, if not why, Max is beginning to think...done. Until they get back to the Gruphupt and Maso tells them that he just received word Erlichmann was working for the SIS and they need to find his notes!

Next episode...deeper and deeper...
