Prep For Cold Wars!

I am still subject, even in my mid-40s to uncontrollable urges. The latest example is my decision to sign up to host three games at the next Cold Wars in Lancaster, PA. http://hmgs.site-ym.com/?CWHome

The theme for this year's convention is the American Civil War (ACW), so right up my alley, right?

We'll see.

The first game, I had run before - using the awesome Brother Against Brother rules and 15mm skirmished based figures, and a historical battle from Sherman's early Atlanta Campaign.

Except...for this scenario - I wanted to switch to 25mm figures.

The switch has been a long process for me. I'd painted the 15mm guys in the early 2000s when I was just getting back into wargaming as a quick solution. A few years back, I decided that I would stick to 25-28mm scale for skirmish fights and 15mm for big battles...mostly.

But...

Lucy, you got some painting to do...

The second scenario was a little different, but still using the 25mm figures and the Brother Against Brother Rules - this one a Winter Raid on Pohick Church Virginia around the time of the Burnsides 1862 Fredericksburg Campaign.

Need some cargo for the raiders to loot, so...

Still needs sealing and flocking

My third fight was going to be a big'un. Using the One Sheet ACW rules and 15mm based figures to fight 1/2 of the big Pea Ridge Battle from Arkansas.

Everything was going fine...until I started working on the OB (Order of Battle - the make-up and structure of the Armies).

Let me just say - it was jacked.  The Confederates in particular.

But I should not have been surprised. For multiple reasons the Confederates in the Western Theater, especially in the first years of the war were cavalry heavy. Pea Ridge is a new research area for me and I'm enjoying Michael Shae's book very much.

The Western Civil War is almost completely overlooked in our Public Education system (that my two children are in) - but then, these days it seems most of the Civil War is hand waved, in favor of the block of instruction on Harriet Tubman...yeah, go Public Education.

For my little part of this battle the OB was NOT a balanced affair. Historically, this was a problem - for me...well, in my best Quint voice, Looks like we'll need a bigger cavalry...

And then I realized...I don't have any based 15mm ACW Cavalry.

FIRST batch of cavalry - Union Part 1

Close-up, still needs sealed and flocked.

The Union too had a jacked up command structure that boggled the mind, but I can mirror that with existing rules and figures.

More later, as I get off my butt and paint...
